The Grammy’s 2021 a list of my favorite winners.

Let’s talk about the winners and their music.

I also made a little list on Spotify for you to actually listen to the music(based on the genres I love). Other genres matter, don’t get me wrong, but I wouldn’t be the person to comment fairly on the music. Here are the winners:

Record of the Year: Billie Eilish- everything I wanted

If you don’t know this song, I don’t know where you’ve been, honestly. Billie is a very talented young woman at the beginning of her big career.

Album of the Year: Taylor Swift-Folklore

Didn’t know about this, amazingly, surprisingly good, and a mature album full of well-produced songs. Damn! Taylor, you’re all grown. This might just be an album I’ll replay now and then.

Song of the Year: Dernst Emile II, H.E.R. & Tiara Thomas – I can’t breathe

I can’t breathe, the last words of George Floyd. In this song, you can feel the pain and hurt, from beginning to end. In my mind the footage of him laying on the ground display yet again, his last words, the words of his daughter, the demonstrations globally. Pff, hurts looking back, doesn’t it? That’s why we must all work, for a brighter future.

Best new artist: Meghan Tee Stallion

Meghan you’re a savage, even my daughter sang ‘I’m a savage’ every she went, she kind of wanted to the dance too, fortunately, she didn’t succeed hahaha!

Best pop solo performance: Harry Styles – Watermelon sugar

Best pop duo/group performances: Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande – Rain on me

Best pop vocal album: Dua Lipa – Future nostalgia

My Daughter and I listen to this album almost every day, my daughter can even sing the Chorus to ‘Levitating’. We sometimes just sit and watch all of Dua Lipa’s videos on YouTube.

Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronic album:
-Kaytranada Featuring Kali Uchi- 10%
-Kaytranada –Bubba

I must confess I’ve never heard of Kaytranada, but I will surely listen to the Haitian-Canadian more often because this is the kind of dance music I love.

Best R&B Performance: Beyoncé – Black parade

Beyoncé, what shall I say about this genius. All we can really do is congratulate her.

Best Traditional R&B Performance: Ledisi – Anything for you

Yeas, the R&B you would want to hear every time.

Best R&B Song: Robert Glasper, Meshell Ndegeocello & Gabriella Wilson – Better than I imagined

Best R&B Album: John Legend- Bigger love

Conversations in the dark, <3

Best Rap Performance and Best Rap song: Meghan Thee Stallion ft. Beyonce – Savage

I would have loved for ‘Dior’ to have won this Best rap Performance, from the rapper I started loving when he already passed away. Rest peacefully Pop Smoke.

Best Melodic Rap Performance: Anderson .Paak – Lockdown

Anderson, you make me so happy!

Best Latin Pop or Urban Album: Bad Bunny – YHLQMDLG

I am a sucker for Latin pop music. They say I am Moluccan (Indonesia), but whenever I hear Latin music I feel it in my soul, I’m not sure where my roots lay. Must look into that a little further.

Best Contemporary Blues Album: Fantastic Negrito – Have you lost your mind yet?

That’s why I look into the list of winners because I love to get to know new artist and their music, like this blues album. Gives me life.

Best Reggae Album: Toots & The Maytals – Got to be tough
Best Global Music Album: Burna Boy – Twice as tall

Best Music Video: Beyoncé, Blue Ivy & WizKid – Brown skin girl

This song is actually a very important message to my daughter because she is a mixed-race baby. And even though what she (and the rest of the world) sees is that she is a white-skinned girl, but if she looks closely, she’ll see, that she is not white, not black, she is both. Both colors blended. This song helps her to accept one side of her skin color. Because she sometimes can’t put the pieces together, as she is only six years old.

It must be hard, once you think about it. I’ll never know what she feels, I know in our environment, her mixed skin is normal, I hope that she embraces the color of her skin and the way it was build and that she acknowledges that her skin is a gift.

All I know is that being brown is my biggest pride. My skin is a gift to me, a gift that big that it gives me power, to walk this earth with so much pride. ‘Brown skinned girl, the best thing in the world’.Yes, to me being a brown skin girl is the best thing in the world! I’ll never know what it’s like to be both, I’ll never know what it’s like to be the other, but I do not wonder, I take pride in what I am, how can’t I?

With that said, songs have so much meaning, it’s much more than melody and verse. And that’s why these artists (and others, because there were many more winners) deserve to be celebrated and given a price for their achievements.

XO
Put on a song and let the music give you life!
